A close talk with: Jota (Guitar)

Welcome to an exclusive interview with Jota, the secondary guitarist of CYGNUS. Known for their epic Viking metal sound, CYGNUS blends powerful melodies with mythological themes. Today, Jota shares insights into his musical influences, the band's creative process, and some memorable moments from their journey. Let's dive in!

1. What are your main musical influences and how have they impacted your playing style?

Jota: The Beatles, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson. They influenced my versatility in singing.

2. Is there a particular guitarist or band that has been a major inspiration for you?

Jota: The Beatles.

3. How do you integrate these influences into the unique style of the Viking metal band?

Jota: I’ve always liked progressive music, and this, combined with other genres, gives me the necessary experience to play such a diverse and energetic genre.

4. What is your favorite song to play live and why?

Jota: "Ulfberth" because of the progressive guitar riffs. I enjoy them a lot.

5. Is there any song in the band's repertoire that stands out to you due to its complexity, emotional impact, or audience response?

Jota: "Skal" always gets a great response from the audience.

6. Any special memory from a live performance that stands out in your memory?

Jota: There have been several moments, especially during our first national tour. There was a show in Medellín in front of almost 10,000 people.

7. How would you describe the songwriting process within the band and your role in it?

Jota: It's an avalanche of ideas that get grounded and directed.

8. How do the songs typically develop in the band? Is it a collaborative effort or do individual contributions dominate?

Jota: It's very collaborative but under Deneb’s direction.

9. Do you have a particular approach or routine when composing music?

Jota: No, inspiration can come at any moment.

Three Words:

  • Three words to describe Deneb: Ingenuity, knowledge, and talent.

  • Three words to describe RUXX: Energy, virtuosity, and charisma.

  • Three words to describe Andrés: Talent, improvisation, and virtuosity.

  • Three words to describe Cygnus: Energy, art, and elegance.

10. What challenges does the band currently face and how are you addressing them?

Jota: The biggest challenge is being in a part of the world where our music is not sufficiently appreciated. We are trying to build a mostly European audience.

11. Are there technical, creative, or logistical challenges in making the music and videos?

Jota: All of them, hahaha. The music is very complex and fast, the setup is laborious, and the direction is strict!

12. How does the band keep innovating and evolving musically over time?

Jota: By being open to new genres, listening to music, and trying new things.

13. What is your long-term vision for the band and where would you like to see it evolve in the coming years?

Jota: I would like our product to be valued and to be able to share it with as many people as possible.

14. Is there a specific goal the band is pursuing artistically or professionally?

Jota: I think we all want to make our work known on a large scale.

15. How do you imagine the band's music could influence its followers and the music scene in general?

Jota: I believe we make it clear that music can be well thought out and executed, but also fun and exciting to listen to.
