In this exclusive interview, we dive into the mystical world of CYGNUS, a Viking metal band known for their powerful storytelling and evocative music. Today, we explore the inspiration and creative process behind their instrumental piece "Walking through the Forest of Life." Join us as Deneb and Ruxx share their experiences, challenges, and the deep connections they forged while creating this enchanting track. Discover how this magical piece, infused with the serene sounds of the harp and flute, aims to reconnect listeners with nature and the ancient spiritual essence of the forest.

What inspired the band to create this instrumental piece with harp and flute? Was there any specific experience or theme that influenced the creation of this music?

Deneb: The piece was born when Ruxx suggested I showcase my skills as a composer in a classical, instrumental work that our curious fans could enjoy differently. It was the first song of the album, and although I didn't intend to make it classical, I gave it a more Celtic focus on the melodies and harmonies of the harp. I also wanted it to have a simple instrumentation so it could be played anywhere, like "Huginn and Muninn." This was the first track of "Revival" that was composed, and from there, the general concept of the album emerged.

Ruxx: It’s a fusion of Celtic and Viking music summarized in flute and harp. It’s a rather short composition and is perfect for capturing the magic of the forest.

What was the creative process behind "Walking through the Forest of Life"? What led you to decide to film a video in a natural setting like a forest?

Deneb: I've always been interested in composing songs that make the listener connect with what's truly important. In this case, it's the forest, nature, and the ancient forest religions with gods who don't seek to profit from a few lying mortals. I wanted listeners to connect with that spiritual part that we often overlook in modern life. As for the video, it was absolutely necessary to film it in a forest—it's not "Walking through the Lake of Life," it's "Forest." The forest brings magic, connects you with inner peace and tranquility, making it the perfect setting for our video.

Ruxx: The creative process for this song was very interesting because we fused two different cultures, Celtic and Viking, which are different but share the same spiritual connection to nature. We wanted to film the video in the forest because it was appropriate and met all the requirements for such a video. Deneb came up with the theme and also orchestrated it for the opening of the album.

Is there a particular message or emotion the band wanted to convey through this instrumental piece?

Deneb: Our message is always about caring for nature. We often exploit natural resources excessively for profit, as if we had another planet to go to, which is lamentable. With music like this, which connects you with the forest and yourself, we hope to create awareness and open the eyes of those who listen. Hopefully, this awareness will spread to others around them.

Ruxx: I believe it’s about the importance of caring for nature. It’s a small campaign to help people appreciate its beauty through music and to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our ecosystems.

What were the challenges and benefits of filming in a natural setting?

Deneb: The challenges are always the same: lack of electricity, internet signal, basic phone signal, and lack of bathrooms. However, the benefits are the magic that such a place brings. The forest itself is wonderful and beautiful, providing a calm atmosphere that allows everything to flow better despite being a work environment.

Ruxx: The challenges were about finding and preparing the perfect spot for filming because it’s a vast forest full of pines, moss, and debris. There are scorpions and other insects, making it complex. But once we found the right spot, everything went smoothly. It was one of the fastest videos we’ve filmed so far.

Can you share any special or funny moments that occurred during the filming of "Walking through the Forest of Life"?

Deneb: Since there's no GPS, we often got lost in the mountains. We also encountered animals that could have caused some trouble, like scorpions and snake skins. A venomous bite wouldn't have been good! But well... I was walking around the forest in just my socks!

Ruxx: We had a great time the night before with wine, barbecue, and jokes.

Was there any unique experience related to filming in the forest that fans might find fascinating?

Deneb: Ruxx and I did a "recon" to explore the forest and choose the right set for filming. We prepared everything, moved heavy logs, and dealt with many insects, while Stef Usman was getting her makeup done. We also stayed at Jota's country house, which is relatively close to the forest. The night before, we had a barbecue with wine, whiskey, music, and lots of laughter.

Ruxx: The shape of some pines and a small, curious hideout.

What reactions have you received from fans regarding "Walking through the Forest of Life"? How has this instrumental piece resonated with your audience?

Deneb: I think both the song and the video have been well-received by our fans. After seeing the video, they were able to connect more with the song, realizing it's the heart of "Revival" rather than just a secondary track. They found peace, calm, tranquility, and magic in it, and many have started to think more about taking care of what the planet has given us. Each person does their part, and all those small contributions are vital for the environment. We hope there are enough to create a significant naturalist movement.

Ruxx: It's interesting because people initially said, "This song inspires a lot of calm and transports me to a place just like the video." This means the music has an implicit magic that works on its own.
