In Norse mythology, the Bifrost is the bridge that connects the world of the gods with that of humans, a magical and powerful structure that cuts across the sky in vibrant colors. In CYGNUS, we took inspiration from that vision to create one of our most ambitious songs: "Bifrost". Today, Ruxx, our talented drummer, shares the process behind the creation of this epic track, filled with progressive and acoustic elements that capture the essence of this mythical bridge.
"Bifrost" is a truly unique song within Fire and Tales. What do you like most about this track? What makes it so special for you?
It’s a unique piece in its style—folk, epic, metal, progressive, psychedelic! It brings together so many elements that make it special to me. As a drummer, working on a song that flows between so many genres is a real challenge and a joy.
This song has an unusual structure and blends progressive and psychedelic elements, as well as an acoustic section. What was the creative process like, and what challenges did you face when working on such a complex composition?
We wanted the music to mirror the beauty and form of the Bifrost itself—something magical, colorful, and vibrant. The challenge was making sure the music felt like it could transport the listener, like the bridge does in the myths. We worked hard to make the transitions between sections feel natural, even with all the complexity.
The video for "Bifrost" was shot during the COVID-19 lockdown, which must have added an extra layer of challenge. How was it filming under those circumstances, and what impact do you think it had on the final result?
It was definitely challenging. Everything was done from isolation, but in a way, that gave us a lot of time to focus and really plan out the details. The lockdown made us rethink how we could include people and made the project more collaborative, bringing fans and friends together during a difficult time. It felt like a message of strength and unity.
"Bifrost" features a lot of people, both in the choirs and in the string sections. How was it coordinating and uniting all those voices and instruments to create the song’s atmosphere?
Surprisingly, the lockdown made it easier to gather everyone because people were at home and had the time! Deneb did a great job distributing the parts for the orchestral arrangement. It felt like everyone wanted to contribute to something special during that period.
Can you tell us about the composition? Who was behind the lyrics and the music, and how did you collaborate in developing the song?
Deneb and Cole were the ones who worked on the lyrics. I focused more on the production and drum arrangements. It was a real collaborative effort, with everyone bringing their ideas to the table.
There’s an interesting mix of acoustic and electric elements in "Bifrost." How did you decide to include these sections, and how did they influence the final character of the song?
We don’t usually force anything when we create. The music itself tells us what it needs. For Bifrost, the blend of acoustic and electric elements felt natural because of the contrast between the physical bridge and its mythical qualities. The acoustic parts bring out that connection to the folk side of our sound.
Can you talk a bit about the theme of "Bifrost" and how the lyrics connect with the music? What message or story were you trying to convey with this song?
The Bifrost is the bridge between Asgard and Midgard. It’s fast, colorful, and full of power. We wanted the music to feel like a journey across this magical bridge, something that cuts through with intensity and purpose. The lyrics follow that idea of a powerful connection between realms, and we reflected that in the music.
Do you have any special memory or anecdote from recording "Bifrost" during the quarantine? How did the global context affect the way you worked on the song?
I wouldn’t say there’s one specific memory that stands out, but working under such unusual conditions was an experience in itself. Everything had to be done remotely, and it gave us a lot of time to focus, but it also meant we had to get creative with how we collaborated.
"Bifrost" is undoubtedly one of the gems of Fire and Tales. How do you see the band’s evolution from this song, and what impact do you think it has had on your musical journey?
"Bifrost" is definitely one of those songs that marks a milestone for us. Even though it hasn’t been played live yet, it’s a song we can learn from as a band. It shows how far we’ve come in terms of complexity and experimentation.
Finally, what do you feel when you perform "Bifrost" live? How is the experience of bringing such a complex and emotional song to the stage?
We haven’t played it live yet, but we’ll be including it in our upcoming world tour. I think it’s going to be a powerful moment, bringing all those emotions and layers to the stage in front of a live audience. I can’t wait!
Thank you so much!!! ❤️ Great conversation, it answered some of my questions as well regarding the song. World tour?... I take you by your words!!! :))))
